So... what is this dramatherapy thing?
Then, how is it different to other kinds of psychotherapy?
Do I need to be an actor then?
What does the dramatherapist do?
What can dramatherapy do for me?
Dramatherapy is a form of psychological therapy that invites you to use your ability to express yourself in an artistic way in order to deal with important issues, trauma, mental health problems, disorders or to just generally cope with life, develop and grow.
Dramatherapy works with role play, stories, games, improvisation, movement and other ways of creative expression.

Using art and creativity you will be able to look at things in a different way in order to grow, develop, deal with deep issues and problems and make troubles bearable. Mental health disorders and issues are also dealtt with, focusing on emotional healing and life conditions improvement.

In dramatherapy you can bring characters, stories and creative ideas that might be somehow related with the issues you want to work with. Sometimes a song, or a movie, or a scene of a play moves us deeply. Dramatherapy uses that kind of unconscious connection with art to work with emotions, ideas and situations.

In the sessions you can also build your confidence up by rehearsing situations or conversations that you might find difficult in life in order to find out how they affect your mood and to develop tools to cope with and confront them.

No, you do not. We all have the ability to express ourselves in a creative way. Nowadays we just watch TV shows or listen to music, but it is our artistic ability that makes us prefer one type of music or one movie. In dramatherapy we put those almost dormant skills to work in order to deal with different issues.

If you are an artist and already express yourself creatively, all the better to use them in a therapeutic way!
The dramatherapist guides you through activites like improvisations, drawing, stories and metaphors so you can explore and look into yourself in a safe space. It is the dramatherapist’s job to create the time and space for you to feel free to look at problems in different ways.

The dramatherapist is there to support you while you look at issues that may occassionally be painful and uncomfortable. There is no judgements and confidentiality is at the centre of any therapeutic work.
